Sanders crowd overflows rally in Springfield

Posted: Updated:

Supporters of Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders packed a large outdoor rally in Springfield Thursday.

Oregon is clearly a must-win state for the Vermont senator if he has any hope of winning the nomination.

Sanders certainly has a large base of support not just in Portland, but in the entire state, as the overflow crowd showed.

Thousands of people turned out at Island Park in Springfield to hear Sanders speak.

Sanders stressed how he is counting on the large number of Progressive voters in Oregon as he tries to keep Hillary Clinton from clinching the Democratic nomination.

One of the big themes from Sanders Thursday was empowering America’s youth, with comments on investing in education.

"Maybe, just maybe, we should be investing in our young people in jobs and education, not in jails or incarceration," he said to the crowd.

For the most part, Sanders steered away from the threat that the Clinton campaign poses, instead focusing on the consistent themes of Wall Street corruption, education reform and overcoming poverty, topics that resonated with the crowd.

"The only way to create a future that is good for everyone is to make sure young people dominate the entire country and are well educated in what they are discussing,” Sanders supporter Jackson Ohlsen-Johnson said.

After the rally, Sanders stopped by a restaurant in downtown Eugene for lunch, and while he attracted a large and supportive crowd there, the question remains:  is it too little, too late?
