A woman woke up to the smell of cigarette smoke and a stranger fondling her as she slept next to her 8-year-old daughter in southeast Portland, according to court documents.

Brandon Bradley Bell, 30, was arraigned in court Friday on charges of sex abuse and burglary.

Investigators said DNA evidence connected him to the incident in October 2015.

Court documents state a woman living in a converted garage adjacent to a family member's home in southeast Portland woke up to find a stranger in her room.

She said the smell of cigarette smoke in the room initially woke her up. A probable cause affidavit states she then found the man kneeling next to her bed with his hand up her shirt, and he then kissed and licked her neck.

The woman told police she had never seen the man before. She told the man she needed to move her daughter, court documents state, and then went into the next room where her young son was sleeping.

She looked back into her bedroom and saw the man on her bed with his pants off, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit states she told the kids to run to the main house and she followed them. They woke up a family member who got the suspect to leave.

Court documents state the woman went to the hospital and a sex assault nurse swabbed her neck where the man had licked her. The Oregon State Crime Lab tested the neck swab and found Bell's DNA. A cigarette butt on the floor next to the woman's bed also tested positive for Bell's DNA, according to court documents.

Court records state Bell has nine felony and four misdemeanor convictions, as well as 15 parole violations. He is also currently facing trespassing and stalking charges for a separate incident in March.

He is due back in court for the sex abuse and burglary case on May 8.
