Stolen scrap metal returned to St. Helens Senior Center

Posted: Updated:

A man who stole scrap metal from a senior center in St. Helens returned it after seeing himself on the news.

On Wednesday, surveillance video captured two men load up a truck with a lawn mower deck, an estimated 300 pounds of scrap metal.

The metal was supposed to be for the senior center's scrap metal program which uses the money for the organization's Meals on Wheels program that helps home-bound seniors.

On Friday morning, with help from St. Helens Police, one of the suspects gave the stolen goods back after he admitted to stealing them.

Police said the suspect saw himself on FOX 12 and that's what made him want to return the metal.

While the people at the senior center are happy to have the mower deck back, they can't soon forget that it was the eight time, in eight months, that the group has been robbed.

"We can't have things like this continue to happen, and if we let somebody get away with it once, then what's the next person going to expect? They're going to expect us to let them get away with it too," said Zach Young, who works at the senior center.

Police told FOX 12 the man was very apologetic and the officer there even noticed that he seemed to genuinely fell bad about the situation.

Police have not arrested anyone in this case.

Police said while the act appeared criminal in nature, the officer was not convinced that the suspect meant to steal from the organization.
