PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Fire and Rescue responded to a southeast house fire which sent one woman to the hospital.

It happened around 6:40 p.m. Monday on Southeast 59th and Center Street.

A neighbor across the street heard screams and saw smoke coming out. Without thinking twice, he ran over to help the woman.

Fire crews said a woman in her 60s was sent to the hospital with smoke inhalation and is expected to be okay.

“It could’ve gone worse,” said Luke Hiatt, whose uncle helped rescue the woman. “It was a close call.”

A fire investigator reports the cause of the fire maybe because of an improperly discarded smoking material.
