BROOKINGS, OR (KPTV) -

A driver died after slamming her car into the back of a stopped pickup on Highway 101 three miles south of Brookings.

Investigators said a northbound 2006 F-350 pickup driven by Rebecca Crockett, 56, of Portland, was stopped in the left lane of the highway to make a left turn at 4:44 p.m. April 29. Police said she had to yield to oncoming southbound traffic.

Police said a 2007 Mazda 3 driven by Susan Childress, 47, of Brookings, hit the back of the pickup.

Childress and a passenger, Reggie Dickerson, 47, of Brookings, were taken to the hospital. Childress was subsequently flown to a hospital in Redding, California where she died Sunday, according to police.

According to witness statements, Childress was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to avoid colliding with the pickup at the last second.

Crockett was not injured in the crash.
