PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Summer festival season on the Portland waterfront is getting started so city officials are trying to make Naito Parkway better for visitors.

On Tuesday, Portland city commissioners and leaders with the Portland Rose Festival and Better Block PDX gathered to kick off the Better Naito project.

It involves reducing Naito Parkway to just one lane for cars along Waterfront Park and roping off the other lane for pedestrians and cyclists.

This is the second year the city is trying out the plan and they said it had very little affect on traffic last year.

Officials hope the modified traffic plan will encourage more people to walk and bike to summer festivals.

“This is good for everyone,” said Commissioner Steve Novick. “Even if you don’t come down to the Rose Festival, we all benefit when thousands of Oregonians are able to walk more safely and use walking and biking for transportation.”

Festival-goers will be able to use the Better Naito plan for the first time this weekend for the Portland’s Cinco de Mayo festival.
