PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland’s city council has passed two ways to preserve and enhance the character of a historic neighborhood.

The Skidmore/Old Town historic district is a national historic landmark in Oregon.

Many have admired the architecture of the historic buildings down in this part of Portland.

Some of the signature historic features in the area are the 19th Century cast iron facades and cast iron features on buildings.

The Portland Development Commission has a collection of cast iron from other buildings that were torn down or renovated.

The city council approved a plan Wednesday directing city bureaus to prioritize re-using some of these cast iron artifacts in new construction and to preserve artifacts like these in renovations.

They also passed new design guidelines to make sure future historic renovations and new construction in the area, in order to preserve the historic character of Old Town.

Portland residents said they liked the plans, which they said highlights the city’s unique culture.

“I think it’s great. It’s kind of taking parts of the past and incorporating them into the future, which I think is pretty powerful,” Portlander Matt Poppelaars said. “I think it’s what kind of makes Portland unique compared to a newer city that doesn’t’ really have this culture. So I think that’s important.”
