A teen girl remains in critical condition a week after the car she was in was hit by a wrong-way driver on Highway 26, killing her friend who was also a passenger in the car.

On Wednesday, the girl's mother made a plea for people to not drink and drive.

McKenna Hoffstadt, 17, is still in critical condition and her family doesn’t know what to expect from day to day.

Last week, Hoffstadt and Brandon Wendell, 21, were passengers in a car driven by 21-year-old Taylor Melger. The friends from Sherwood were heading east on Highway 26 at 1:10 a.m. when police said 50-year-old Armando Gallegos got on the freeway going the wrong direction and crashed into them.

Wendell died at the scene. Both drivers are still in the hospital and police said they were both drunk. Hoffstadt's mother told FOX 12 so many families are hurting now and this was all preventable.

“If you are out drinking, please do not get behind the wheel,” said Paula Hoffstadt. “Three lives were unnecessarily – one lost – and two altered for the rest of their lives. These kids will never be able to do a lot of the things that normal kids will get to do.”

McKenna Hoffstadt is undergoing her fourth surgery since the crash. Her mother said friends are organizing a car wash at Les Schwab in Sherwood on Saturday afternoon to raise money for all the victims’ families.
