PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A major project will cause significant delays for the MAX Blue, Red, and Green lines in the coming weeks.

From May 8 through May 21, TriMet will be improving the MAX track along 1st Avenue in downtown Portland.

TriMet said trains will not be running on regular schedules and they expect trains to be extremely crowded.

TriMet is asking all riders to plan ahead. Either take the bus, carpool, or use other services.

Contractors will be replacing worn rails, updating the track bed and updating the drainage system.

"There will be enhancements to the drainage system that's already in place. That system will serve better to relieve localized rains and waters that occur here like major flooding, but localized flooding will be carried away more reliably and hopefully quicker," said Ric Kindig, Manager of Maintenance of Way Operations.
