VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A Vancouver family is wondering why someone set their car on fire twice in one month.

The most recent fire on Monday almost spread to their house.

“We heard an explosion inside the house,” next door neighbor Tim Pierce said.

Neighbors say they could feel the explosion several houses away.

“There was this loud boom. My house kind of shook, so I ran outside,” neighbor Jamie Sager said.

It was just before 11:00 p.m. People that live in a Northwest Vancouver neighborhood sprung out of their beds.

“As soon as I saw the fire again I was like, they got it this time,” Pierce said.

The victim is a local teacher and coach.

“The second one was a lot worse. It was a bigger boom, more damage,” Sager said.

The first fire happened on April 3, according to deputies. That fire caused some minor damage to the driver’s side of the car. That time the car was parked in the street.

On Monday, the car was parked right next to the house when it went up in flames.

“You can see singe marks on the garage door where it was all black and sooty,” Sager said.

Neighbors tried to push the car away from the house.

“The combination of not wanting to get in the car while it’s on fire and trying to get it into reverse, it just didn’t happen,” Pierce said.

When that didn’t work, neighbors tried controlling the fire with a garden hose.

“We just kept on hosing it down as much as we could,” Pierce said.

Family and neighbors are now asking why someone would do this.

“It’s really scary. Cause, they’re a really good family and not sure why they are a target,” Sager said.

“It doesn’t make me feel safe. Every time I hear a noise now I want to look out and see what’s going on,” Pierce said.
