PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Technical rescue teams are working to recover the body of a person who is believed to have died in a trench collapse in southwest Portland.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded to the scene on the 8100 block of Southwest 54th Avenue at 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

Due to the length of time the worker was buried, firefighters said they transitioned to a body recovery operation.

Investigators said the worker had been at the bottom of the trench, which measured 11 feet deep, 3 feet wide and 70 feet long. Firefighters said the trench was equipped with shoring, which is a temporary set of walls with bracing to hold back the earth and prevent collapse, but the worker was outside the shoring area at the time of the incident.

The city of Portland maintenance bureau is providing assistance with heavy machinery to remove the dirt.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will conduct an investigation, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.
