A 68-year-old man called police to report firing a gun at people who egged his house. Now, William Dean Thomas is facing criminal charges.

Police responded to the 6000 block of Southeast Mitchell Street at 1:41 a.m. Thursday.

Thomas told police he was outside cleaning up the mess made from eggs being thrown at his house, when a car drove up and the people inside threw more eggs at his home.

Thomas said he fired a gun at the people in the car after the second incident.

"I was sort of half-awake, half sleeping with this newborn and I heard what distinctively sounded like 3-4 gunshots, like quick pops," said Jessica Leshane, who lives next door to Thomas.

Investigators said they found evidence of gunfire, including a bullet hole in a neighboring home close to a child's bedroom.

Thomas was arrested on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in the city.

Witnesses told police they saw a red Ford Taurus speeding away after the gunfire and people inside the car were heard laughing.

Throwing eggs at another person's property is considered third-degree criminal mischief, a Class C misdemeanor crime. If the property sustains damage, charges can be raised to a higher degree of crime, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Anyone with information about the people who threw the eggs in this case is asked to contact the police non-emergency line at 503-823-3333, reference case #16-141405.
