PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An online petition is seeking to update Oregon's handicapped parking signs.

The change.org petition shows a more active image with the word "reserved" instead of "handicapped."

"The new symbol suggests independence and engagement while focusing on the person, not the wheelchair. The new symbol is universally viewed as more positive and respectful," the petition states.

Supporters say the change can be made in a budget-neutral and non-political manner.

In February, Connecticut's governor introduced legislation to use the new signs in cases when new accessible parking spaces are created or when old signs need to be repaired or replaced.
