CLATSKANIE, OR (KPTV) -

A former Clatskanie police officer is now suing the city, claiming he was fired for reporting the police chief made racist comments.

In the suit, Zachariah Gibson said he reported racist comments former Police Chief Martin Hoover made about African Americans last June.

Chief Hoover retired soon after the accusations.

Gibson claims that City Manager Greg Hinkelman then fired him in March without cause.

FOX 12 reached out to City Manager Hinkelman, and he told us, "We will let the court system work this out."

Gibson's lawyer, Trevor Caldwell, released a statement to FOX 12 on Monday stating:

"We believe the City of Clatskanie terminated Officer Gibson's employment without cause. We look forward to the review process and we believe it will ultimately result in Officer Gibson being allowed to return to serve the City of Clatskanie."
