KEIZER, OR (KPTV) -

Dozens of images depicting child sex abuse were found on a man's cellphone after a girl reported being followed by him as she walked to school, according to police.

The investigation began Monday morning when a seventh-grader at Claggett Creek Middle School said a man in a vehicle followed her and took photos, video or both with his phone.

The girl did not have any direct contact with the man, but police said she made a mental note of the description of his car, including the license plate and a unique sticker on the windshield.

The girl immediately reported the incident to school staff members, who then called police.

At 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the school resource officer was patrolling the area when he spotted a car matching the description provided by the girl. The license plate was off by just one character.

Police said the driver had just come from the area of Claggett Creek Middle School and Weddle Elementary School. The officer followed the car as it parked in front of a nearby home on the 3700 block of Pleasant View Drive Northeast.

The driver went into the home, but came out to talk to officers at the scene. Police said 22-year-old Trevor Phillip Highsmith gave written consent for the officers to seize and search his cellphone. He also volunteered to go to the police department to be interviewed, according to officers.

Detectives said dozens of images of child pornography were found on his phone. Investigators believe he downloaded the images.

Highsmith was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail on 10 counts of second-degree encouraging child sex abuse.

Additionally, police said they discovered several other images of girls wearing backpacks who appeared to be walking to or from school. While those photos are not criminal in nature, police said additional follow-up efforts are under way to identify the girls.

Police released photos of Highsmith's car Tuesday. A jail booking photo was not immediately available. Anyone with additional information about this investigation is asked to contact Officer David Zavala at 503-390-3713, Ext. 3512.
