KEIZER, OR (KPTV) -

A seventh grader is being praised tonight for reporting a man who, police say, was taking photos of her on her walk to school.

The girl was on her way to Claggett Creek Middle School Monday when she said, she saw a suspicious man following her in a car, taking video or pictures of her with his cell phone.

The student took note of his license plate and the description of his car and told school staff.

“That's amazing. You hope to see more kids do that,” parent Susie Trantham said.

Tuesday morning, officers spotted the car and followed it to a home where they found Trevor Highsmith. Police say he allowed investigators to search his phone. Detectives said, it was then that they found photos of child pornography.

“You don't know what's going on in people's head and what kind of people are out there. They may seem to be ordinary and unfortunately, they have different ideas,” Trantham said.

Police said they also found several photos of girls walking to or from school with their backpacks, which were not illegal, but concerning.

It was the dozens of images depicting child sexual abuse that led to the arrest.

“I don't know if he's also been doing this with the children around here, or if this is something new old or what,” neighbor Marsha Baker said.

In all Highsmith faces ten charges of encouraging child sexual abuse in the second degree.

Those around the school are praising the middle school girl who did everything right.

Highsmith will be arraigned in court Wednesday morning.
