PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It's the top-selling craft beer in the state, and in its honor, the city of Portland has proclaimed Sunday as Hefe Day.

It has been 30 years since Kurt and Rob Widmer debuted the unique hefeweizen beer.

The official proclamation by the city is a big deal for the brothers, who originally feared Hefe could put them out of business.

“At that time nobody had ever seen a cloudy beer, and actually if beer had a little haze people thought it was bad, so we had a little discussion,” Rob explained. “We thought it might kill us as a company because Hefe is extremely cloudy. And we sent it out to the Dublin Pub, they were our first account, and we kind of held out breath we thought it might put us out of business.”

Widmer Brothers Brewing will be hosting a free Hefe Day party on Sunday at Pioneer Square from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
