PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The American flag and Oregon flag flying outside a Portland school were found Wednesday morning after both were taken down and burned overnight.

According to Portland Public Schools, investigators think some kids may have burned the flags, but they do not believe the incident was a hate crime.

School staffers replaced the damaged flags flying outside Peninsula School right away.

A custodian discovered the remains of the burned flags on the school’s blacktop area, then called police and the fire bureau.

A school district spokeswoman said they do not know how many kids were involving in burning the flags or what school they may attend.

Despite investigators not believing this to be a hate crime, people in the neighborhood still find the flag burning disturbing.

“I think it's unfortunate that they would desecrate the flag because we have veterans in their neighborhood that fought,” Damon Miller, who lives near the school, said. “I see them as I walk around the neighborhood. They're proud to be veterans. I think we should respect everybody around here.”
