GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A Gresham teenager is still in the hospital after she and a friend were struck by a delivery van last month.

Viri Orozco-Hernandez's family spoke at OHSU on Wednesday saying while the road to recovery may be long, they are hopeful.

"To even have my sister open her eyes, it's extremely hopeful," said Yahaira Orozco-Hernandez, Viri's sister.

On April 20, Viri and Raquelin Velasco-Gutierrez were walking home from Gordon Russell Middle School. While the girls were in the crosswalk at Northeast Kane Driver and 1st Street, they were struck by a flower delivery van that ran a red light.

Viri was Life-Flighted to OHSU Doernbecher in critical condition.

Weeks later, Viri is now awake and breathing on her own.

"She does has feeling and she's able to move on her own, but the ability to do it like a normal person is severely impaired," said Dr. Piantino.

Viri's doctor, Juan Piantino, said her recovery has been slow and she still has weeks, if not months, to go.

"Motor problems both in the upper and lower extremities, and also speech problems," said Dr. Piantino

While Viri hasn't spoken since the accident, her family is holding on strong.

"She has not spoken to any of us but we feel she has her own ways of communicating with us, following of the eyes," said Yahaira.

During the press conference at OHSU, Viri's family shared how wonderful of a person she is.

"She's funny, she's kind. She's the best sister anyone can have, and I'm super thankful and I'm hopeful. My sister's amazing," said Yahaira.

Police said the driver of the delivery van, Deann Lepoidevin has not been cited for the crash. Lepoidevin's daughter believes her mom suffered a medical issue leading up to the accident.

Viri's friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help the family pay for medical bills.
