A man who shot a Fairview police officer and was injured when officers returned fire is now facing multiple charges including attempted aggravated murder, according to police.

A Multnomah County grand jury indicted 40-year-old David Allen Charlton in connection with the April 27 shooting in Gresham.

Investigators said Charlton crashed an SUV into a fence on the 200 block of Southeast 188th Avenue and left the scene carrying three bags.

Responding officers did not know Charlton and had no indication he was armed and wanted on a federal parole violation for a 1999 bank robbery, according to police. Charlton served 13 years in prison.

Fairview Officer Scott Shropshire and Gresham Officer Mike Brooder approached Charlton on Northeast Couch Lane. Police said Charlton immediately shot at them, hitting Shropshire near his waist.

Court documents state Charlton fired 11 shots from a handgun and an AR-15 rifle at the officers, hitting Brooder's patrol car six times.

Both guns were recovered at the scene. A probable cause affidavit states Charlton's three bags included a military style backpack and a camouflage duffel bag.

A grand jury indicted Charlton on charges of attempted aggravated murder, possession of weapons by a felon, possession of a short-barrel rifle, second-degree assault, distribution of heroin and meth and failure to perform the duties of a driver.

Charlton remains in the hospital, but a tentative arraignment was scheduled for Friday.

The grand jury also cleared the three officers directly involved in the shooting of any wrongdoing. They have all been returned to active duty.

Shropshire was released from the hospital the day after he was shot.
