Families feel safer on Springwater Corridor after homeless camp sweep

Posted: Updated:

The sun was out Thursday, and so were the crowds - including near a popular bike trail that was recently cleaned up.

On May 3, the City of Portland cleared out a large homeless camp on the Springwater Corridor.

Now patrons at businesses nearby say they feel safer since there is less drug use and garbage in the area.

Ivan Davis is a regular at Cartlandia off 82nd Avenue in southeast Portland. So it was routine to bring his grandkids to grab a bite to eat and find some shade.

“When it’s hot like this and you don’t want to cook, everyone is around here cooking, doing the job for us,” Davis says of Cartlandia.

Not far from Cartlandia is the Springwater Corridor - a popular place for bicyclists when the sun comes out. It’s also where the City did a recent sweep of a large homeless camp nearby.

Davis says he now feels safe coming to the area with his family, especially since he’s had frightening experiences near the trail in the past.

“They broke in my car and stole everything out, and I know it was somebody homeless, because they were all across the street,” Davis recalls.

Someone else who knows the area very well is Curtis Toops, who bikes the Springwater Corridor about three times a week.

Now that paths are cleared on the trail, Toops says he can rest at ease while peddling through.

“I feel a lot safer having my family out on the bike paths now,” Toops tells us.

But Toops wonders what the homeless camp sweep means in the long run for other trails around town.

“It’s nice the City is trying to step up and clean the trails for anyone; but, where are they moving them to, and what are they doing to help them? That’s really the key,” says Toops.

A local bike camp called “No Kid Left Inside,” usually takes children out on the Springwater Corridor. Fox 12 spoke with the director of the camp, who says the fate of that camp this summer is up in the air, until they’re sure it’s safe for kids.
