Salem resident says homeless man targeted his home, set fire to his car

Posted: Updated:

A Salem man is worried for his safety, after a man with a baseball bat battered his front door, smashed his window, and tried to set fire to his car.

Jeffrey James said he heard a loud banging on his front door shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday, and rushed from his bedroom to see a man with a bat smash his window.

James called 911, but the man took off running and managed to evade police.

James said he’s seen the man, who he believes is homeless, around the neighborhood before.

“I’d seem next door on the pavement before, sleeping outside by the sidewalk, covered with a tarp. Looked like he was cold. I’ve offered him food before, given him food,” said James.

The trouble started a couple days ago, James said, when the scooter he bought his wife turned up missing.

“My wife saw him riding it and when he was trying to outrun her, he crashed into a garbage can, and all of his stuff went everywhere and he took of running,” said James.

James said the next time he saw the man was Thursday morning.

Along with the broken window and dented door, James said the man set a fire on his car, using an accelerant.

Salem Police confirm they are investigating both incidents, and are attempting to obtain a warrant for the suspect’s arrest.
