YAMHILL COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

Crews responded to a wildfire in Yamhill County near McMinnville Friday.

According to the Oregon Department of Forestry, the fire is on private property. No structures were threatened, and there were no evacuations.

Officials say now is the safest time to prepare your property against fire danger.

The Oregon Fire Marshal is urging homeowners to clear a 'defensible space' around their home. That includes cleaning up leaves and brush from the ground, clearing dead limbs from your trees and clearing gutters.

"It could start with just mowing your lawn. Make sure your lawn is short, that it's green, that any of those forest fuels that may have fallen out of the trees and are on the ground are picked up, if they have wood piles that are up against their homes stacked up against the home for winter time, now is the time to move them away from them, said the Oregon Fire Marshal.

Officials said now is the safest time to make these preparations because people can run their lawnmowers, chainsaws, and weed-whackers.

Once the fire danger really escalates, those tools can actually spark brush fires.

The Oregon Fire Marshal worries the wet winter has people feeling more relaxed abut fire danger. He wants to remind everyone that Oregon is still recovering from drought conditions multiple years in a row.
