A possibly endangered Beaverton teen may have ran away from home to meet a man she met online in California or Arizona.

Beaverton Police said Friday that 13-year-old Madison Taussig, who goes by Maddie, went missing Thursday afternoon when she was last seen on her family’s security camera leaving her home near Scholls Heights Elementary School on a purple bicycle wearing black clothing and carrying a backpack.

Jeff Taussig said he believes his daughter met a strange man, possibly an 18-year-old, online through Xbox Live and then started messaging him on her cell phone, making plans to visit him in California or Arizona.

“It’s one of those things you always fear is going to happen,” Taussig said. “You try to teach them that it’s not safe and what to do.”

Taussig said Maddie was using an app called Kik. It’s a popular messaging app notorious for the anonymity it allows users to have, and it can be difficult for messages to be traced back to phone numbers.

According to the family, Maddie has never ran away from home before, but has a history of talking to strangers online and through her phone.

“I had seen in the past there had been text messages from out of the state,” Taussig said. “You try to put in certain security measures, you try to limit how much internet they have with their phones, without just completing taking it away, but there always seems to be a way for them to overcome what measures you have.”

Taussig has an app on his phone that tracks his daughter’s phone, but Maddie’s phone is now turned off.

The phone last pinged in Wilsonville. Police think Maddie may have ridden the train from Beaverton to Wilsonville.

Her family is frantic to hear from Maddie and hoping of good news as soon as possible.

“Staying positive that she’s not hurt someplace in a ditch, or anything like that,” Taussig said.

He also wanted to share a message he hopes reaches her wherever she is.

“We just want her to know that we love her, everybody loves her. Everybody just wants her to be safe and come home. She’s not in trouble, and we just want her back home safe and with us here.”

Maddie is described as 5’3” and 95 lbs. She has hazel eyes and long brown hair.

Anyone who saw Maddie, or knows where she might be is asked to call police at 503-629-0111.
