Deputies: Even with warmer temps swimmers still facing cold water

GLADSTONE, OR (KPTV) -

Many people around the Portland-metro area are spending the hot day Friday near the water.

Local deputies continue to issue a warning, though. It may feel like summer outside, but the water is still icy.

When the temperatures soar like they did Friday, places like High Rocks become packed with people enjoying the sun and cooling off in the water.

But if people plan to swim, deputies advise they need to be aware of strong currents and cold temperatures.

Fox 12 rode along with the Clackamas County Marine Patrol Friday morning. They were expecting to see a lot of boaters on the water, as well as some swimmers.                                           

Clackamas County Sheriff’s Deputy Morgan Guthner said his two warnings for people are to wear life jackets and do not drive boats impaired.

He also said it’s about 55 degrees in the water, and people aren’t prepared for those temperatures and can go into cold shock.

“In the water, your body loses heat 25 times faster than it does in the air so you get cold,” Guthner explained. “People get prepared and they’re not prepared for the current. It overtakes them.”

Another safety concern to keep in mind is that the AMR lifeguards won’t go on duty at High Rocks or at Glenn Otto Park in Troutdale until Memorial Day weekend, so swimmers
