PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It’s a rare occurrence in May, but as temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees in the Portland area Friday people did their best to soak up the sunshine before it’s gone.

“When the Portland sun comes out, people come out,” Darci Hazlewood, who manages the Hot Box food cart along the south waterfront, said.

Working inside a metal cart without air conditioning can be a challenge, but Hazlewood said she didn’t mind; it's weather that keeps her busy.

“We do smoke everything here, so the smoker is going constantly all day, which I’m about to start up and smoke some chicken,” she said. “It can get up to 100 degrees in here, for sure.”

She brought out a fan, had extra water and opened the windows for cross-ventilation Friday, while customers outside looked for a spot in the shade.

“I love the sun, but just the heat can be a little overwhelming,” Robert Graham, a food cart customer, said.

Friday afternoon, people hoping to cool off along the river boarded the Portland Beer Barge for a 90 minute peddle-ride on the water.

“We’ve definitely got a lot of water on board so if anyone gets thirsty aside from the drinks they’re drinking, we’ve got some water to hydrate,” June Jeppsson, who works on the Beer Barge, said.

“This is like summer, it’s amazing,” Beer Barge rider Greg Moyer said. “It’s only May, middle of May, and here we are about to do some peddling on the river!”

But, as much as Portland is known for its food carts and brews, it’s also known for changing weather.

Clouds and rain, along with possible thunderstorms were expected to roll in Friday night, bringing a roughly 20-25 degree drop in temperatures for the weekend.

“Cloudy, rain, yeah – well that’s typical spring,” Moyer added.
