Former addict turns life around with help of local organization

For many years in his adult life, Shawn led a life of drugs, high speed chases and going in and out of jail.

“No matter how much money I had, the fake friends I had,” Shawn said. “None of it was sufficient to be, this is worth it.”

In late November 2012, Portland police gave Shawn, who asked Fox 12 not to share his last name, a citation after a high speed chase on Southeast Holgate Boulevard.

In August 2011, police charged with hit and run for a chase which led him to jail. Court records show Shawn was arrested several times after trying to outrun police on separate situations.

“It keeps happening,” Shawn added about his constant time jail time. “I got tired of it after so long.”

Shawn said a couple years ago he walked into City Team to find help, an organization which helps men overcome drug and alcohol addiction.

“I thought about all the harm I’ve done and worked the steps,” he said.

During his time at Alcoholics Anonymous at City Team, Shawn said during less than half way through the program he realized he forgave himself.

“His story is unique and that he got it the first time around.” City Team Director Mike Giering said. “To watch him thrive as a leader, man and reshape his life is a huge testament of the work of AA and City Team.”

Now with more than two years of sobriety, Shawn volunteers as a case manager at City Team to help those who were once like him.

“I have so much going for me,” Shawn said. “I’ve shaken off all reservations I have.”
