Sunday was the kickoff of a summertime favorite for Portland residents: Sunday Parkways, an invitation to walk, bike, roll, and discover the city's neighborhoods.

The first Sunday Parkways of the year was held in East Portland, with a long stretch of the ride going down the Springwater Trail, a segment of which had been cleared of homeless campers earlier this month

That segment, which runs behind Cartlandia, the popular food cart pod near SE 82nd and Harney, has remained clear of campers, but Sunday Parkways participants only had to ride a little farther down the trail to encounter signs of the city's homeless crisis.

"There were a lot of tents that we saw up and we even remarked to one another that, wow, there’s a lot of homeless people out here," said Asani Seawell, who biked along the route.

Tom Cheeks, who lives just down the street from Cartlandia, called the City of Portland's camp clearings a "band-aid," saying a long-term solution needs to be found.

"Hopefully for those people who don’t have a place to live, they can get some decent help and services," said Cheeks. "Some big steps need to be taken to help these people."

The City of Portland currently allows camping outside between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., but that policy is at the center of a lawsuit brought by neighborhood groups and business interests against the city.
