PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man watching a traffic stop outside a southeast Portland bar was arrested after dropping a gun and running from officers, according to police.

Police said 23-year-old Ervan Ronnell Herring was standing next to a bar at 11:59 p.m. Saturday when officers conducting a traffic stop approached him.

The Gang Enforcement Team officers knew Herring from previous incidents and identified him as a criminal gang associate.

As officers approached, police said Herring walked away from the bar into a neighborhood. An officer reported seeing Herring duck behind a vehicle and then hearing the sound of metal hitting the pavement.

The officer believed Herring had possibly discarded a firearm. Police said Herring was told to stop, but he ran away.

Herring was located after a neighborhood search on the 2700 block of Southeast 121st Avenue.

Officers checked the vehicle Herring ducked behind and located a handgun.

Herring was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm, third-degree escape, second-degree criminal trespass and interfering with a police officer.

Anyone with information about gun crimes in the City of Portland is encouraged to provide information to the Portland Police Bureau's Tactical Operations Division at 503-823-4106 or gangs@portlandoregon.gov.
