Cannon Beach firefighters rescue seagull caught in kite string

Posted: Updated:

Cannon Beach Fire & Rescue responded to a wild rescue call involving a seagull in need of some help.

On Monday morning, a person walking back from the beach spotted a seagull hanging from a kite string along Washington Street in Cannon Beach.

Cannon Beach Fire & Rescue then came out to help the bird. Two firefighters went up the ladder to get the seagull, and crews covered the bird with a towel to help calm it down.

Video of the rescue was posted on YouTube

Rescue crews say they were excited to use their ladder truck for the first time on an animal rescue.

"We do this when we have to and when we need to. This is the first animal rescue with the new ladder," said Lt. Mike Johnson, who is with Cannon Beach Fire & Rescue.

Johnson added, "Maybe a broken wing … it didn't seem to fold down like it normally would."

The incident also serves as a great reminder to people. If you are going out and having a little fun with the kite or even out fishing, please be mindful of string and fishing line because it could be harmful to Oregon wildlife.

Cannon Beach Police say the seagull was picked up and taken to the Wildlife Center of the North Coast in Astoria. A veterinarian there will take a look at the bird's wing and get it healed and ready to be released back into the wild.
