PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A nonprofit is gearing up to donate hundreds of boxes of food to local veterans and military families this week.

The Operation Homefront location in northeast Portland regularly serves military families in need with their rent, car payments and more. On Friday, the day before Armed Forces Day, they will be donating boxes of food to families across the area.

Walmart and the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division have teamed up to donate all the food.

It's all to let the service members and their families know that they are appreciated.

"This is our time that we can actually go out there and tell our service members thank you, thank you for everything that they do," said Janice Collee, director of programs for Operation Homefront. "And it’s just a little thank you we can say for serving our country."

And it is not too late for qualifying service families to sign up. More information is available on Operation Homefront’s event page
