GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A hit-and-run suspect attempted to steal cars from people who stopped to help at the scene of a crash, according to police.

Officers responded to Southeast Powell Valley Road and Burnside Road at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said a 2010 Honda Civic was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the back of a 1997 Chevrolet pickup.

Police said the driver of the car, 29-year-old Heidi Kirillova of Portland, tried to steal two vehicles at the crash scene, but she was stopped by bystanders.

Kirillova then ran away, according to police, but officers caught her on the 2400 block of East Powell Boulevard.

Kirillova was arrested on charges including DUII-controlled substance, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, third-degree robbery, third-degree assault and failure to perform the duties of a driver.

The 40-year-old driver of the pickup sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at the hospital.

Highway 26 westbound was closed entering Gresham during the investigation.
