PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon Treasurer Ted Wheeler has been elected as the next Mayor of Portland after he secured enough votes to win and avoid a November runoff Tuesday night.

Wheeler won during Tuesday's primary election night with 57.8 percent of the vote against 14 opponents.

Wheeler avoids a November runoff by winning the majority of the votes, and will not have to go up against second-place finisher Jules Bailey, who received 16 percent of the vote.

"I said when I announced in September that this campaign wasn't about me - it was about what we can do together to build a stronger Portland. This campaign has been about the real people who are struggling in our city. The real neighborhoods that are going through upheavals. The real challenges we all face to make sure we're not losing what makes Portland so special. And in the face of that, we worked together to offer real solutions," said Wheeler. "I'm very proud that over the course of the last nine months, so many people joined this effort. The voters of Portland have told us loud and clear that they agree - it's time for the political games to end and the solutions to begin."

Wheeler will continue to serve as Oregon's Treasurer until Dec. 31, 2016.

He will be sworn in as the Mayor of Portland in January 2017.
