PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon Treasurer Ted Wheeler was elected as the next Mayor of Portland Tuesday night, winning with nearly 58 percent of the vote.

Wheeler spoke about his recent victory at Portland City Hall early Wednesday morning, saying he is eager to get to work.

“I am extremely energized. I can’t wait to be sworn in as your next mayor in January, and I’m really grateful for the people of this city,” he said.

Wheeler said he plans to address several issues facing the city including the housing and homelessness crises.

The new mayor also briefly discussed his plans to work to build regional coalitions.

“It’s really important that the next mayor not be sequestered behind a desk at City Hall but be out in the community holding office hours, talking to people, meeting with leaders from around the region and forging a consensus on the right way to go not just as a city but as a region, ” Wheeler said.

Wheeler will continue to serve as Oregon Treasurer until December 2016.
