PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It is National Infrastructure Week- a time to appreciate the agencies that do important work that is largely invisible- like the Portland Water Bureau.

Even though people do not usually see the crews from the Portland Water Bureau, they are constantly doing major maintenance work.

Every day, at least 15 crews work on the city’s water mains, valves and fire hydrants.

The Portland Water Bureau operates 27/7, 365 days a year.

That means that if a water main goes out on Christmas, someone from the bureau has to fix it.

“I often say that our work crews are like the offensive line of the city. You notice us if something goes awry, but every day we're working to make sure things aren't going awry, and so the fact that we're unnoticed is okay with me because that means we're doing our job and people can take it for granted that safe, clean drinking water comes out of their tap, every day,” said Ty Kovatch, Director of Maintenance for the Portland Water Bureau.
