PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police are calling it a fast smash and grab. A group of people swiped several cell phones from a west Linn store and took off.

Air 12 was overhead when a car chase on Highway 43 turned into a foot chase in a Lake Oswego neighborhood.

Home surveillance video also caught the suspects—two juvenile girls and four men--running into a forested area. But not far behind, were police officers and their K9s.

"It unfolded on the fly. It really worked out well," says Captain Neil Hennelly, West Linn Police.

It was a quick chase that began at a West Linn AT&T store.

"It’s a mob robbery, six people show up, distract the owner or whoever is in charge of the store and just grab whatever they can, run out jump in the car and flee," Captain Hennelly explains.

The group fled to a nearby neighborhood, with handfuls of stolen cell phones in tow. But their getaway soon turned into an accident scene.

"You heard a loud screech, they must have come around quite hard and then a loud smash," says John Trupin, whose car was hit by the suspects.

A short foot chase ended, and the suspects were cuffed in less than 30 minutes. But the headache remains for Trupin.

"The back seems to be pretty dented and scuffed up,” Trupin tells us.

Trupin’s new car was parked on the street, in the path of the suspects and became collateral damage.

“It was a gift from my uncle for my graduation, just this past two weeks ago. I’ve just had the car two weeks,” Trupin explains.

No one was hurt in the pursuit, including the suspects.

FOX 12 learned the arrests were a joint effort by West Linn, Lake Oswego and Portland Police.

Officers tell us that one of the suspects was listed as a juvenile runaway from Seattle. She, and the five other suspects are now in the Clackamas County Jail.
