MOLALLA, OR (KPTV) -

An elderly man and his overnight caregiver were found dead after fire damaged a home in Molalla Thursday morning.

Fire crews responded to the 13800 block of South Leabo Road shortly after 7 a.m.

Molalla Fire officials said the bodies of a man in his 80's and a man in his 20's were found inside the home. The younger man was the overnight caregiver for the older man.

According to crews, the fire started during the night in the older man's bed and was contained to the bed. The man was able to get out of bed and make it to the bathroom, but he was overcome by smoke inhalation.

The caregiver made it to the back door but also was overcome by smoke.

Fire officials said a daytime caregiver later found them and called 911.

Crews said there was not an active fire when they arrived but they hosed down the bed as a precaution.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is taking over the death investigation.

Officials added that it was unclear if the fire alarm was activated. They said this is a good reminder to check smoke alarms to see if they are working properly.
