Woman falls, hurts face on MAX while trying to get phone back from teen

A woman fell on a MAX train and hurt her face while trying to get her phone back from a teenager, according to Portland police.

The woman, who police say is homeless, said she was recording cell phone video of a group of teenagers because they were making fun of her shoes.

She told police one of the teens grabbed her phone, so she tried to follow him, but she fell and hit her face on a seat, causing her nose and mouth to bleed.

Police were called when the train stopped at the Gateway Transit Center.

A 13-year-old suspect was booked into the Donald E. Long Juvenile Justice Center on charges of theft in the second degree, harassment and interfering with public transportation.

He was located when loss prevention staff at a Winco Foods store stopped him for shoplifting, according to police.

“The kids came back and handed her phone because they realized what they did,” Stefanie Stevens, who was on the MAX train, explained.

Stevens hopes the teenagers involved are more respectful in the future.

She also hopes this will encourage people to speak up when they see harassment on the MAX.

Stevens said she was preparing to intervene when she saw the woman fall.

“I just hope in future instances like this, people will stand up and say something. Because nobody did,” she said. “It’s kind of sad.”
