Portland Trail Blazers center Mason Plumlee helped deliver some good news to a family in need Thursday morning.

Dan Hanner was an Army staff sergeant for six years and spent 15 months serving his country in Iraq nearly a decade ago. No longer employable, he and his wife, who is his caregiver, are being cared for and given a generous gift.

In conjunction with Operation Homefront, Eckrich Meats and an assist from the Blazers' Mason Plumlee, the Hanners received free Safeway groceries for a year. That's $260 per week for 52 weeks.

The Hanners live in Birkenfeld, which is on Oregon Route 202 between Jewell and Mist. The husband and wife are military veterans raising two kids and they are understandably very thankful for the tribute.

"I have two teenage boys," said Cathie Hanner. "This is going to help a lot!"

Plumlee said, "I have family that have served before and you can never forget how invaluable they are. They go out and put their lives on the line to protect us and … it's an unbelievable sacrifice. Sometimes there are consequences that come with that, that sacrifice and we just, we always have to recognize them and give back to them."
