PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An American Paint Horse will have the honor of carrying the American flag in the 2016 Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade.

Chinook is 17-years-old and for most of his life he has been apart of the Happy Canyon Pageant, as well as a fixture in events all around the region.

"It takes a special horse, definitely, to accomplish that up there - and be safe at the same time," said Bryson Bronson, Happy Canyon show rider.

Bronson has been working closely with Chinook for seven years, and knows Chinook has what it takes.

"He's got like four feet, and you got a 20-foot drop off on one, or 30-foot, or whatever it is, and you've got little kids that are like one year old standing next to ya, and Chinook has to go running by those guys in the dark, can't see much, and turn around, and come down there," said Bronson.

Chinook's breeder, Rusty Black, expects the crowd to warm up to him pretty quickly. Black said what makes Chinook different from other horses is how he loves people.

"He's a true people horse. The littlest child could come up to him right now, and he'd put his head down where that child could pet him. That's just the way he is. When a little child touches him, he melts like butter," said Black.

To see Chinook in action, the Grand Floral Parade will be held on June 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
