PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police hope to foster good relationships with kids in the community by handing out coupons for free Slurpees.

The Portland Police Bureau is teaming up with 7-Eleven for the convenience store chain's 'Operation Chill' program.

For a limited time, officers will be armed with coupons good for free Slurpee drinks at 7-Eleven stores. They'll hand out the coupons to young people they encounter on patrol who show good behavior.

Police said they have a limited number of coupons to distribute and the program will go until they're all gone.

'Operation Chill' is a nationwide initiative that began in Philadelphia in 1995.

It's aimed at giving police officers a positive reason to interact with kids and teens.
