PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Police Bureau Chief Larry O'Dea injured a friend in a hunting accident in Harney County last month, according to a bureau spokesman.

The bureau confirmed Friday that O'Dea was on vacation in late April in Harney County when he had a "negligent discharge" from his .22 caliber rifle.

A close friend was injured, and he was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. The Portland Police Bureau reports that the Harney County Sheriff's Office was notified of the incident.

O'Dea also reported it to Mayor Charlie Hales and to the captain of the Portland Police Bureau's Professional Standards Division.

"I'm very thankful that my friend is ok and I'm tremendously upset this happened," O'Dea said in a statement.
