Forest Grove HS students gain real world skills by building a house

Posted: Updated:

Students at Forest Grove High School are building real world skills by building a home.

The Viking House Project has been going on since 1975. It's a class for Juniors and Seniors, where they go through the whole process of building a home.

Students will lay down foundation, put up drywall, and even install flooring.

The students focus on building energy efficient one-story homes with a lot of carpentry details.

Juniors and Seniors who want to participate have to take prerequisite classes and get a recommendation by a teacher.

All of the students have one thing in common - they are all hard workers.

"Not only are they learning, they have to work to a real world standard," said Forest Grove High School teacher Chris Higganbotam.

Higganbotam said it takes a combined 4,000 hours to complete the house.

The Viking House Project is self funded.

The sale price from the 2015 home went to help the students build this year's home.
