An Oregon City man was shot and killed by police officers trying to serve him with a warrant Saturday afternoon.

A spokesman for Oregon City Police said two officers were serving the arrest warrant near South 2nd Street and Hwy 99E around 1:40 pm.

Sgt. Matthew Paschall said the suspect, a white male in his late 30’s, resisted arrest and was shot. Other details about the circumstances of the shooting have not been released.

According to a statement released by the department, the officers then called for backup and ambulances. The officers and responding medics both provided medical treatment, but it was too late. The man’s identity will not be released until family in notified of his death.

One officer received minor injuries during the incident and was treated at a hospital.

Nearby business employees and neighbors said the didn’t hear any gunshots and didn’t realize anything had happened until 2nd Street was closed and police were swarming the area.

Many described the area as quiet and typically pleasant.

“(The shooting) makes me feel a little bit unsafe, but I’m glad the police are here to work it out,” said Jeff Wilhite, who rents a home behind the duplex.

Neighbor Brad Hollis said Oregon City’s small-town, safe atmosphere, made the shooting surprising.

“It's why we moved from Portland -- to get away from this type of stuff, and here it is, right in our backyard — it’s sad,” he said.  “I can’t help but think there’s always an alternative to taking somebody’s life — Cops are human they get scared like everybody else, and when you’re carrying a firearm it’s easy enough to pull it out and use it.”

The Clackamas County Inter-Agency Major Crimes Team is now leading the investigation. The officer involved in the shooting will be on paid administrative leave while investigators determine what happened. The Clackamas County District Attorney will decide if the shooting was justified.
