A Canby man stole more than $300,000 in social security benefits mistakenly paid to his dead grandmother over the course of 27 years, according to the Department of Justice.

Ricky Lee Carlson, 63, pleaded guilty to the charge of theft of government funds Monday.

According to court records, Carlson's grandmother was using two different names and social security numbers at the time of her death in 1986. The Social Security Administration was notified of her death under one identity, but benefits continued to be paid each month under the other identity.

Carlson opened a bank account with his grandmother's name in April 1995, according to investigators, and directed the social security funds to be deposited into that account.

The Department of Justice reports that Carlson withdrew money and wrote checks payable to himself from the account.

The Social Security Administration said benefits in the amount of $303,960 were improperly paid between March 1986 and December 2013 to Carlson's grandmother.

According to a plea agreement, Carlson will serve 12 months and one day in jail. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 7.
