Man pleads guilty to arson for Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation fires

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who set multiple fires using road flares on Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District property has pleaded guilty to arson charges.

John Townsend was arrested in December 2015. He pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree arson Tuesday.

The five fires were set between April 22 and May 20. The fires involved unoccupied houses at 4950 N.W. Saltzman Road and 20 N.W. 114th Avenue.

Townsend was employed by the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District as a park patrol security officer at the time of the fires.

He had worked for the department for two years.

Townsend was identified as the arson suspect through witness interviews and surveillance video.

Townsend is scheduled to be sentenced July 14.
