Monse Hernandez spent months in the hospital battling leukemia, then just days after the 15-year-old girl was released she relapsed.
Now her six-year-old sister Emely has become her donor.
Monse’s illness has been a very difficult situation for the Hernandez family. They are divided, with Monse and her mother Guadalupe staying in the hospital, while the rest of the family is still home going to school.
“There has to be one person, one strong person in the family,” Guadalupe said. “And I feel that I have that responsibility.”
Guadalupe had to leave her job to stay with her daughter, while her husband has been working and stayed with the family back home in Silverton while the children were in school.
To help the Hernandez family during this challenge, the FOX 12 Surprise Squad, along with the team at Orchard Supply Hardware, provided the family with gifts for children, new portable air conditioners for the family’s home and $2,500 to use toward expenses the family is facing during Monse’s treatment.
Monse is still receiving treatment, and Emely began the transplant process last week and will remain in the hospital for a while.
We want to thank the Children's Cancer Association for connecting us with the Hernandez family. You can learn more about the CCA at JoyRx.org.
