Fire crews battled a large 3-alarm fire at a church in Hazel Dell early Wednesday morning.

The fire started just after 3 a.m. at the First Congregational Church at 1220 NE 68th Street.

Firefighters from Vancouver Fire Department and the Clark County Fire District 6 said they fire began on the west side of the church outside.

The flames quickly spread to activate three smoke alarms.

Officials said one fire crew was sent inside the church, but were quickly pulled back out due to concerns of the building collapsing.

The First Congregational Church is known as a popular landmark in Hazel Dell. Most neighbors refer to it as the “upside down boat church.”

The church was built in 1962 and was constructed to look like Noah’s Ark.

Firefighters said they did everything they could to try and salvage the building, including dowsing the roof with water.

Crews said this is one of the largest fires they have so far in 2016.

 No injuries have been reported.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
