Officials have closed a temporary homeless shelter for women and couples in Multnomah Village.

City officials said Tuesday that the Sears Temporary Shelter, which served 167 women and their parents, would be shutting down at the end of the week.

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales said he had promised neighbors in the Multnomah Village area that the shelter would only be open for six months while the city found alternative housing options.

Some neighbors, however, felt the shelter had and no negative impact on their community.

“From my personal experience, there’s been no burden, and there seems to be some positive side to it in that it’s a decent and humane thing to do,” said neighbor Paul Dinu.

Hales said 180 beds have been made available at the Peace Shelter in downtown Portland, but several women are anxious to move.

“There is really not a good place for women to be. This gave us the most space, this gave us the most options,” said Jen Wishart, a woman staying at the shelter.

According to Transition Projects, Portland currently only has capacity to shelter 50 percent of its homeless population.
