PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton has announced his retirement following allegations of misconduct, a Department of Justice investigation and calls for his immediate resignation.

In an email to county leaders Friday, Staton set a retirement date of Aug. 16.

Staton wrote, "I can no longer subject any of you to the challenges that I am facing."

Earlier this week, Oregon AFSCME, a union representing 25,000 public services workers in Oregon, called for Staton's resignation and referred to him as the embodiment of "corrupt governance."

The Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff's Association voted "no confidence" in Staton earlier this month.

Staton settled a tort claim with former Chief Deputy Linda Yankee in February that claimed Staton would frequently make sexual, profane and derogatory comments about county workers.

The Department of Justice then launched an investigation into multiple allegations of wrongdoing by Staton, but declined to pursue criminal charges.

Former Portland Police Bureau Chief Mike Reese will transition into the role of interim sheriff.

Staton said Reese will be hired on June 20 as the new undersheriff to acclimate him to sheriff's office operations.

The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution in April to appoint Reese as sheriff if Staton were to step down.

"I want to thank you for your expressed concern, support and continued service to the citizens of our county," Staton wrote to conclude his email Friday.

Staton was on vacation Friday, according to a sheriff's office spokesperson, and not available for further comment.
